Warren Oates is Frank Mansfield, a master cocksman whose drinking and mouthing off has steered him away from his goal of being cocksman of the year. This drives Frank Mansfield to vow never to speak another word until he wins the prestigious award.

This movie is filled with great scene after great scene. With a masterful supporting cast of Harry Dean Stanton (no Warren Oates movie is complete without Harry Dean Stanton) as his gentlemanly arch-rival, Jack Burke, a cameo from a young Ed Begley, Jr. as a dum-witted, cheating cockfighter, Richard B. Shull as his partner Omar Baradansky and a great performance by the writer of the original novel and screenplay, Charles Willeford, as the wise Ed Middleton.

I could rave about this movie all day, as it is my favorite movie of all times, but I wouldn’t be doing it any justice. This is the type of movie that you watch after eating a rare prime rib with a cold glass of your favorite beer. Then you sit down on your favorite chair, open a bottle of Fighting Cock Bourbon, pop this DVD in and get your mind blown away as you realize that everything that you have done so far up to this point in your life has been meaningless. You are just a grown child with a head filled of allusions to what you thought it meant to be a man.

Never in your life will you see such a manly movie full of guys caring for and playing with their cocks. The camaraderie between Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton is amazing despite them being rivals. Just to give you a taste of what this movie entails; within the first few minutes of the movie Frank Mansfield loses a cockfight to Jack Burke to no one’s fault but his own for trying to cheat the odds by making his cock look like it had a cracked beak. Unfortunately, it backfires, Frank loses his bet which included his car, trailer, a few bucks and his 14-year old girlfriend. Of course she protests, but Frank has nothing to say; he can’t say anything. He vowed not to talk, but he does have a thought as he walks away.

“I feel sorry for her in a way; but I ain’t worried about her. She’s pretty and young, a good lay. Hell, she’ll get by anywhere. Piss on her and the horse she road in on.”

This movie is fantastic. Warren Oates is great as Frank Mansfield. This screenplay is wonderful. The acting is great. And the movie is full of great quotes and scenes, all the way until the credits roll at the end. Do I recommend watching this movie? I do, but not to everyone. If you can’t gut a fish, change a tire, grow a beard, bet on a horse, or willing to give up a life of comfort and security in exchange for adventure, glory and conviction, then this movie is not only not for you, but you shouldn’t be allowed to watch it. This is a Glennfiddich Whiskey, an Iberian Black Leg ham, a Koby Steak, a 1969 Charger, and a beautiful exotic woman all wrapped up in movie form.

This movie gets 10 meaty steaks out of 5. Yeah, I just did that.

A new section on the meat that will hopefully turn into a regular occurrence. Netflix instant stream is awesome, but its only a sliver of what they have. Despite this lack of access to their robust library, choosing a movie is still a daunting task, I have literally spent hours trying to decide what to watch. It is our bloody policy at the RMR to get right to the meat as quickly as possible and be out. So I am putting it upon myself to Sherpa you through the mountain of bullshit which is the netflix instant stream to find films that you actually want to watch.

The Mack

Pimping aint easy, especially after getting out of the pen for not being a rat, you dig. Unfortunately thats what Goldie has to do, and lucky for us we get to watch this piece of Americana unfold on the silver screen. Did I mention that a Young Richard Prior is in this film, hell yeah

This 1973 classic only gets better with every viewing. Killer vernacular, supreme style, sexy 70′s ladies(before plastic surgry), whitie, funked out soundtrack and the highest B quality prodcution next to the Shaw Brothers movie makes this an easy choice whether its your 1st viewing or you 100th. Defenatly stream this on your flat screen, no jive.

Appleseed

Stricktly for the anime heads Appleseed is another flick about how humans and AI will get co-exist. The movie is alright, the artwork looks cool, but then again it is kind of dated. The concept and idea of this film is so much better then the actual movie, if that makes any sense. The soundtrack has people like Paul Oakenfold and Bastment Jaxx which enhances movie with dope beats while mechs engaging in combat for the future of humanity. See this utopia type movie if you are in a SciFi state of mind.

The Saint

No one can touch Val Kilmer in his prime, yeah i said it. This spy movie is the SHIT!. Do you like Elizabeth Shue? Who doesn’t, unfortunately she doesnt take of her shirt in this one.

Val Kilmer plays a contract spy that has a thousand faces and more tricks then motherfuckin MAcGyver. He also plays a delicate game with some heavy hitting politically fucked up Russians who are after Elizabeth Shue’s formula for Cold Fusion. Whats cold fusion? Ask Stephen Hawkins.

Albert Fish

This documentary is about one of the most fucked up people in American History. This dude grabbed the American public’s attention and will grab yours. Warning this flick is about a person who is PURE EVIL. Albert Fish was a masochist, racist, pedophile, rapist, cannibal and white. If you can handle the subject matter than stream this dark piece of our history

Patton Oswalt is a loser, hardcore Giants fan who gets beat up by his favorite player. This turns his life upside down, not that there was much to turn over and sets off a series of events that fly out of control towards the end. This movie has finally convinced me that the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and all those other movie awards are simply a celebrity circle jerk that only boast about films that are supposed to be good. But they don’t do their research, they don’t watch the films, they don’t give a fuck.

Why do I say this?

Because Big Fan was fucking great. I thought since Patton Oswalt is in it, that this movie was going to be a silly comedy; boy was I wrong. This was a very serious role with some humor added. Oswalt was great and the story was very entertaining.

It was a good thing that I was the RMR reviewer for this film because a deeply rooted point of the movie has to deal with the New York Giants Vs. Philadelphia Eagles fans rivalry and we have one of each on our staff. Shogun00 bleeds Giants’ blue and Whiteface screams Eagles. Luckily, I don’t give a fuck about football, but I was born about a mile from Giants’ Stadium so…

Nevertheless, like I said before, this movie is great. And if Mickey Rourke and The Wrestler could be handed so many awards and critical acclaims then Big Fan deserves them too.

I’m going to give this movie 5 bloody steaks… I wasn’t going to go so high despite loving the movie, but then I remembered my favorite line from the film, “Maybe he’s here to see the Wu-Tang”

Hurt Locker Movie Review

Finally Netflix has answered the call and sent over The Hurt Locker in the mail. There is a huge buzz about this film so I had to check it.

You thought TNT knew drama, you were wrong. Hurt locker is intense starting with the first scene. The pace of this film is what keeps you in, it is a super uncomfortable and you never know when the next explosion happen. The movie is about a special military unit that defuses bombs in Iraq. The 3 characters fuel this film, you are concerned for all 3 well being. Jeremy Renner character is a master bomb defuser and all around madman getting his 2 subordinates in his unit into the worst possible scenarios on almost every mission. Anthony Mackie character is one of those dudes who keeps a count until his rotation is over, and towards the end you see him start to spiral into madness. Brian Geraghty character is the person who is having the worst time. War is literally driving him bat shit, and throughout the film you wait to see his melt down. The best part about this film is the intense atmosphere that lingers throughout the entire film, even in the most subtle scenes. The actors do a bang up job depicting the different faces of today’s military, whether that face be positive or negative. This is my generations war movie about a war in my time.

Final verdict, this movie should be in the Oscar race.

Humanity Sucks During the Apocalypse – The Road Movie Review

The short review, this movie is super heavy and REALLY depressing.

Viggo Mortensen is the Man. He is a great actor whether he is playing the King of Middle Earth, the Devil or an undercover cop turned Russian mobster. It is his performance in the Road which makes this movie worth watching. His acting combined with the cinematography enables the audience to sit through 119 minutes of post apocalyptic views and interpretations of the human condition. Everything from love to first impressions take a front seat in this film which analyzes and discusses humanity or lack of humanity throughout this world. More so it shows the audience a real future and how human beings would turn on each other. Paranoia is what drives Viggo’s character to keep heading south, presumably to find warmer weather. His son is a reflection of a youth who only knows this world that he was born into, cold, cannibalistic, grey, both silent and loud. The Road does a good job of portraying impending doom, its constantly in the atmosphere, lurking in the shadows, pumping through your heart. Its this tangible setting that engages you, that forces you to see what is happening in this world, and the fear is this is what our futures could come to, or in some parts of the world already has. There are places in this world, right now that are already in hell, a hell on earth, and this idea resonated with me while I watched this film.

Charlize Theron’s character who isn’t in the film much but impacts the movie with a Mortal Kombat uppercut. Viggo’s character is full of hope(or survival) and Charlize Theron’s character shows what happens when that fire inside yourself goes out. Minimal time on the screen, but a significant impact.

So my recommendation?

1.-Don’t see this movie with your girl.
2.-Dont see this movie if you are emotionally unstable, the flick will put you in a Kurt Cobain state of mind, very grunge.
3.-Mountain Dew

If you can stand depressing or into really good film and symbology (BoonDocks Saints reference ) than this movie is for you.

Whip it Not So Good Movie Review

Did you get the Devo reference? Over your head? you suck. You know what else sucks this movie. The worst part is,it was my pick? WTF, how did this happen. Let me explain before I get into the guts.

I have a girlfriend which means that I can’t always dominate what we watch, so I let her choose flicks every once and a while. She remixed the situation by giving me a choice between Whip It and The Invention of Lying. My fellow meaty associate Mr Redbone reviewed The Invention of Lying, unfortunately I made my decision before he posted his his review. I just wanted to watch a bunch hot of chicks beat each other up on roller skates. I choose wrong.

So that chick Juno is in the movie. This time she is not pregnant, although I would love to see Juno get gut checked into a rail by a big Bertha roller derby type broad, that’s fucking rock n roll. Drew Barrymore really fucked up on directing this piece of shit. I mean this was a bad movie, all I wanted was the movie to end. It took something hardcore and fun and made it mad pussy and cliche. The movie did have one saving grace, Juliette Lewis, she is one hot and bad ass bitch. She was the only believable character in this cookie cutter girl power I’m so uncool I am cool crap. I know what your saying, “It couldn’t have been that bad”, and if I saw it on TBS maybe my perspective would be different, but I was in a movie theater, please don’t make the same mistake I did.

And just to be clear, all the chicks in this movie were super fine, but no nudity and really cheesy acting. Eve needs to step up her thespian game.

Four annoying wannabe actors lock themselves up in a cabin to try to write a movie to star in, because they all suck and nobody will give them a shot. The fat one likes the cute one. The cougar likes the stud. The cute one likes the stud. The stud is trying to get the movie written, the rest are fucking lame. They come up with an idea to write a movie about a slasher with a bag over his head. There is sexual tension, a shit-ton of emotions, lots of manual focusing with the camera, which is annoying as fuck and nothing of interest occurring.

That’s it. That’s the fucking review. This movie is somehow rated R. Why? I have no fucking clue. There was some pointless nudity in the beginning that was neither hot nor interesting. We see the cute chicks boobs, but not even that was enough to help this movie.

You ever hang out with a group of people that you didn’t fit in with? Maybe you were invited to a party by someone from work but it turns out to only be a small gathering and the only other people there are two couples. You know you have no chance of getting laid and frankly everyone is annoying you. Well that’s how I felt watching this movie. Except I kept watching, waiting for someone to die. But unfortunately the only thing that died while I watched this film was my attention.

Baghead get’s half a meaty, bloody steak.

Go ahead and get the movie if you like lame movies that try really fucking hard to be hip and cool. That’s it. I have nothing more to add.

Jamie Foxx is Retarded…well Skitzo in The Soloist

Seriously, when I think back to In Living Color, I can vividly remember how silly and lovable Jamie Foxx’s characters always were. Even when he had his own show, The Jaime Foxx Show, I was like “this guy is funny and great entertainment.” NEVER in a million years would I have assumed he would turn out to be the phenomenal actor that he has become. And in his latest release, The Soloist, he proves yet again his force in the industry. Absolutely amazing. The Soloist follows the true life story of Nathaniel Ayres, a brilliant cello player who suffers from schizophrenia and winds up becoming homeless on the streets of L.A. Its based off the book of the same name written by Steven Lopez who is played by Robert Downey Jr and is the second lead of the film. Steven Lopez is a columnist for the L.A. Times who finds Ayres playing violin in the park and is captured by the sound this man can make with only two strings. Upon talking with him, he finds out that Nathaniel had studied at the Julliard Academy and was forced to drop out due to his battle with his disease. Confident that there’s a great story behind this mysterious musician, he decides to include him in his daily column and sure enough, L.A. was intrigued. Day after day, Lopez finds himself getting more and more wrapped up in Nathaniel’s life and soon becomes much more than the writer of his story. Wonderfully acted by the pair, it received mixed reviews from most critics, most complaining more about the direction than the acting. However, I thought the director did a great job presenting some of the feelings that must be going on in a schizophrenic mind but I guess one wouldn’t know until they’ve had it. He incorporated a scene that was nothing more than music transformed into splashing colors and I thought it was incredible. Also, he did well to show the shit fest that is the L.A. homeless community and how fucked up things really are in Los Angeles. My girlfriend is a case manager for seriously mentally ill patients and she said it was spot on for how the system works for them. A lot of key characters were actually patients as far as we could tell, unless they were some ridiculous actors. We even had an appearance from two True Blood members, Lafayette and Vampire Eddy, also known as Nelsan Ellis and Steven Root, respectively. Absolutely beautiful film do not pass this up, unless you don’t like dramas i guess. Annndd hhhhheeeeeeerrrreee’s the trailer!

Fresh & Delicious: Finding the Dopeness in The Wackness

Its 1994, Biggy has just dropped Ready to Die, Ritalin is the new cocaine, Giuliani is now the mayor of New York. You are now in the setting of tonight’s DVD feature: The Wackness. Starring up and comer Josh Peck and the almighty Sir Ben Kingsley in what has become another ” my favorite roll of his.” This guy just can’t stop won’t stop. Josh plays Luke our protagonist, a recent high school graduate who doesn’t seem to be very popular except of course for the fact he sells weed. And yes, he of course sells weed to Mr Kingsley who plays Dr. Squires, a psychiatrist who seems to have taken on more problems than his patients. Think Kids meets Good Will Hunting set to one of the best soundtracks ever compiled for a movie. I’m not going to go over the whole plot here, don’t worry, but I will say this is a must see for anyone who grew up in the 90′s from the east coast. Familiar settings, from Washington Square Park to Fire Island will bring back those school daze memories (we can use all the assistance we can get.) Highlights of the film: Ben Kingsley hitting a bong and quoting biggy lyrics in an attempt to console his young friend, a brief appearance by Method Man with a well done Jamaican accent, and my favorite line of the movie…”I got mad love for you shorty, on the real. I wanna like to listen to Boys 2 Men when I’m with you.” Go out and get this jimmy jam or order it right CHEA! Roll the trailer please….
