Get Shank Its a Good Thing

Shank is such a cool word with many cool meanings. Shank could be a cut of meat or the acting of stabbing someone with a homemade knife and now a Video Game.

Made by Klei I have been waiting for this downloadable PSN game for months now. It’s a 2D side scrolling Shinobi type action game crossed with the beat’em up combat style of Streets of Rage, only with a robust combo system. Lots of violence and seriously crass language make this a mature title that action junkies crave. Sounds too good to be true, lets investigate.

The 1st thing that pops out at you is the art style. The game is super cartooned out, I am talking cartoon network style but with mature content, so its more like adult swim. Each character and enemy have distinctive and smooth animations that work incredible well with the theme of Shank. Lots of blood, bright colors and even the facial expressions are standouts in this stylized game. If Robert Rodriguez made a video game Shank would be it. The most standout feature in the style is the picture in picture cut scene when you are engaging in actual gameplay, it just pops up, audio and all while you are kick the shit out of some henchmen. The only problem, trying to pay attention and playing at the same time.(a good problem to have)

The voice acting is top notch as well as the narrative. I have only played the single player storymode and it was action packed. You play as Shank, your girl gets kidnapped, tortured and raped, needless to say its revenge time.

Like I stated earlier its 2-D and the game works well. It mixes traditional action beat em up gameplay with unique style and a combo system that makes sense for once. You can shoot arms, use a host of awesome weapons for both melee attacks and heavy attacks, grapple and pounce(personal favorite.) You can cycle through your weapons while using them in combo’s as well, and some of the weapons include a shank, chainsaw, machete, a chain, katana, uzi, 2 glocks, shotgun and grenades. The grapple and pounce actions go even further by letting you choose a host of actions including chain-sawing someone’s stomach in or choking someone out with chains after grabbing or pouncing on someone.

Shank is like a midnight grindhouse flick come to life, unfortunately it plays like one as well. Disclaimer: I have no real problems with the gameplay, I am just being critical. OK now that’s out of the way the gameplay will piss you off at times. The block and dodge features put you way out of position at times and midway through all the madness of combat you will lose sight of your character. Luckily the game is good about giving out health power ups which are extremely necessary at time.

The Boss battles are great, but can be long at times. Long because you have to wait for a certain action to cause any type of significant damage, but again I am being hyper critical.

The stand out worst feature has to be the no online co-op mode. There is a co-op mode but you cant play online, there has to be someone there with you physically, wtf? Apparently there is a stand alone storyline for 2 player mode as well as the single player story, too bad I will not get to play the 2 player story mode cause my girlfriend would rather watch house hunters than stuff a grenade in someones mouth and blow up their face( you can ACTUALLY do that in Shank!!)

All in all Shank has everything I like in a video game, amazing style, awesome soundtrack (which was available on their site for free), blood, great story, on point dialogue and a whole lotta violence. The minor things will not hurt the general feel of this over the top fun action title.

With so much hype about this movie this $9.99 downloadable gem of a game is not getting the proper spotlight it deserves, but I guarantee within a week everyone will be talking about this killer game.

There is so much to talk about where to begin? We will skip the story about how Scott Pilgrim has to battle his love interests (Ramona Flowers) 7 ex’s in order to rightfully claim her heart.

The Look- Totally thrown back to the 8 and 16 bit days. Pixels galore only washed in beautiful HD. And unlike other throwback games this is a NEW GAME. Not a remake with some added levels, which makes this a truly unique experience, especially to a generation that has no idea about this type of game, which I will get to in a minute. The characters are also big enough to see on the screen, this way you don’t have to press yourself closer to the TV with all the brawling going on. Its one of the only games that I can sit on my couch in the recline position and play, but that recline doesn’t last long because of the intense gameplay

The Gameplay- THANK YOU!!!! Have you ever played River City Ransom? Probably one of the best games ever made. Have you ever played Streets of Rage? Defiantly in my Top 10 greatest Sega Genesis games of all time. All you do is go around kick the crap out of people to advance to a boss to complete the level in these types of games. Simple enough but Ubisoft added RPG elements that creates depth and humor which adds tremendously to the fun factor of this download. As you beat people up through with a the character of your choosing that character gains experience points. These experience points levels up your character and unlocks new moves which you can use immediately after leveling up in the game. After defeating an enemy they leave loose change around that you collect in order to pay of food and accessories. The food not only replenishes your health and gut gages, but depending on where you are and what you order the food also adds experience points to your character. There are different attributes in experience, strength, health, speed, defense, etc and different grub will raise your experience but also target certain attributes and give them a permanent boost. You can even go to spot and buy snacks for on the go replenishment. Accessories also boosts these attributes, but don’t actually replenish health or guts. Whats guts? It was a kick ass show on Nickelodeon but those days are over. Its your special meter, where you can either use a special move in a sticky situation or after your health has depleted it will use your guts meter to replenish some of that lost health, but only when you are down to zero on your health. If you have zero guts that means zero specials and when you die, you die. Sounds complicated but its really not. Simple controls, light hit, heavy hit, block, jump, 2 special moves, a taunt and of course dashing/running. You can pick up trash cans, stop signs, baseball bats, beer bottles hell even half beaten up not yet dead enemies and use them and both melee and projectile type weapons, AWESOME!!!!

Shopping- As I mentioned before you can shop for food and accessories. There is a lot of humor here, check out the names of some of the stuff you can buy, awesome. The game is built sort of like Super Mario 3, where you have a map with levels that you can play up till a certain point. You have to go beat a level which unlocks a new level, go to the ma, hover over the level, click X and bang your in a new level. There are shops that are in the levels and after beating a level you can go back at anytime to visit these shops. After visiting the areas that you need to visit you don’t have to beat the level to get out, just exit to the map.

The Music- Oh that video game music, an this soundtrack does not disappoint. It sounds like a game that came out in the 80’s and I LOVE IT.

This game is Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I am currently playing on the easiest setting solo and death came to me more than once, luckily there is an unlimited source of continues. This game is meant to be played with friends, and here lies some hidden flaws. The only way to play with friend is if they are present at the start of the game. No instant drop in, no online play. WHAT? With so much time into making this game awesome they forgot to add these 2 seemingly obvious features. Most of the 16 bit games that came out in the 80’s and 90’s that this game was modeled after had an instant drop in feature. The scenario would happen like so; I would be playing solo, you would come over to my place and be like “I want to get in on some that Scott Pilgrim action” and I would be like “pick up the controller and instantly jump in sunn!”, you CANT do that in this game, single tear. You cant even bust this feature out online, hell you cant even play online! Double Tear, but what does it mean?

Despite the multilayer flaw the game is AWESOME. Hopefully the movie is as good as the game.

1994 Super Hero Is Back This Time in HD – Earthworm Jim HD Review

Earthworm Jim is back, this time on the PSN in beautiful HD.

For those who don’t remember 1994, it was an awesome year. It was also when an ordinary earthworm acquired, through a series of cosmic craziness, a space suit that mutated the puny earthworm into an intergalactic Space Hero. It was on the Sega Genesis and it ate many hours of my 14 year old life. I downloaded this bitch yesterday and ran through the first couple of levels no problem.

Gameloft ported the original game and apparently added some new bonus levels and 4 player split screen, plus washed the whole thing in HD. The result, FANTASTIC. If you are a fan of the 2-d side scrolling action than this is the game for you. The game is dated, but that’s a good thing! All the original humor is still woven into this game and I was cracking up while busting out my mad skills. Some highlights with my 1^st run thru include, launching a cow using a refrigerator, racing my arch nemesis Psy-Crow in a wormhole after every level to get to the next one, blasting crows and rabid dogs with my space gun, using my earthworm head as both a whip and helicopter, rode a rouge hamster, and beat 3 bosses. My demise finally came during a bungee battle where I had defeat a mutated snot by bumping the booger into the cliff walls to break its line all while avoiding this space snot doing the same thing to me and contending with a 1 eyed monster that chomped at me every time I was near the bottom, word.

It looks like I will be seeing all my favorites in this game, PsyCrow, Major Mucas, Rusty the Snowman, Bob the Killer Gold Fish, Evil the Cat, Chuck and Fifi, and Queen Slug Butt all to save Prince-Whats-Her-Face(that is her name for reals). There is so many original charters in this game I could on and on and on……

Lets face it, its all about gameplay and the HD translation is perfectly. If you used to play this game back in 94’ than you know 1 thing, this game IS FUCKING HARD!!! Luckily Gameloft gave you 4 levels of play, easy, normal, hard and Original. Original was so hard it got its own damn category.

I haven’t tackled the multiplayer yet, but I hear you can run through the levels split screen style with 3 other friends, sound like mayhem.

This throw back is priced at a cool $9.99, so even cheap ass mofo’s like yourself can afford it. If you own a Playstation 3 or X-Box 360 download this game TODAY, don’t be a pansy.

New Standard in Shmups – Sin and Punishment: Star Successor Review

A Shump is a 2-d shoot em up video game, personally one of my favorite genres cause I though I was good at these types of games until the new Star Successor for the Wii dropped a couple of weeks ago.

First off, this game is not for everyone, if you aint a hardcore gamer just stop reading this. Alright those normals are gone lets get to the meat….

Sin and Punishment is an aptly named title. I just beat it on easy, and it was beatable but I cant wait to tackle the harder settings. It utilizes the Wii controls to make for gameplay that makes sense, even though the story does not, at all. In fact if you can explain the bullshit story that is going on please email me, I would like a clue.

Back to the gameplay, awesome. You use the Wii mote to point, shoot and slash. The nunchuk is used to move around your character. It is sort of like Panzer Dragoon minus the Dragon. There are 2 characters to choose from, they only differ in their “special shot” The dude has a special shot that cause collateral damage to enemies in the vicinity of his blast, the robo-chick(I think she is a robot) has a special shot which targets multiple enemies at once to take them out. There is an auto lock system that works real well but by the end of the game I was hardly using it, that is until I had to face the bosses in this gem of a game which I will get into in a minute.

There is a lot of movement on the screen, A LOT. If you dont like pretty lights and constant flashes mixed with and old school 80′s techno arcade soundtrack than this is not the game for you.

There is so much action in this game, at times you get overwhelmed with the amount of things that are out their to shoot. After ever level they upload your score to on online leaderboard, don’t judge yourself based on the leaderboard that will only make you depressed. Instead focus on how amazing this game is, there are always news strategies and specific angles on how to defeat an area which makes this game so addictive, oh and the boss battles!!!

Boss Battles is where its at. This is the heart and soul of this game. During each level there will be either a multiple boss battle during the level or just a main boss at the end of the level. Although some of these boss battles are challenging, frustrating and down right insane they are also FUN. It is defiantly a gamers game, constantly restarting boss battles brings me back to the 8 bit days where all you wanted to do is figure out how to beat this boss before mom unplugs the Nintendo, luckily in Star Successor you can literally save the game ANYWHERE. Thats right you can pause and save at any point in this game, which is rare in the Shump genre.

Things I didn’t like about the game. The graphics aren’t amazing, but they work, it has an old school feel to it but some might think its dated. Even though the gameplay and controls are GREAT I did get super frustrated with the target locking system, it might be that I just haven’t mastered on how to use it properly, but then again you don’t have to use the target locking system at all, until you get to a boss that is. And the story is very Japanese meaning I have no fucking clue what is going on, some advise use that skip button, its all nonsense. The game is also short, but these games are always short.

Did I mention that the makers of Ikaruga are behind this title?

Anyways this game is certainly not made for everyone but exposing yourself to new things is what the video gaming is all about. They have twisted a classic genre and pushed the limits to some other world on Sin and Punishment: Star Successor. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Yahoo!!!! Mario is back, AGAIN. And guess what? Bowser has kidnapped the princess, AGAIN. I have forked over some more of my hard earned cash to Nintendo to play this plumbers latest installment, AGAIN.

This game has been getting nothing but amazing reviews, and they are well deserved. Galaxy 2 is fanfuckingtastic. This game has everything a GREAT video game needs. Planet jumping, moving from 2d to 3d worlds, and YOSHI!!!! The humor is actually good in this installment, and new power ups are great editions to the Mario world.

I haven’t been able to play with Luigi yet but I know he is in the game.

In the end its all about game play, and this game has it. It is so much fun throwing on the Wii and running around with Mario.The game is challenging and you might get frustrated, but with an engaging story line, signature Nintendo graphics and tight controls you will soon lose all track of time and enter the black hole of the Mario Universe.

There are some things I didn’t like. The main complaint is the fact after you save and quit the game it does not save the lives you have collected. There are 1 ups all over this game so dieing will not be an issue, but when you start up a continued game, regardless of if you quit with 1 life or 25 lives it will reset the count back to 6 every time. Again not a big deal, you have a faceship (a spaceship shaped like Mario’s face) which have area’s to replenish lost lives with 1 up’s scattered around the spacecraft, and these 1 up opportunities regenerate!

Mario has done it again. This game appeals to EVERYONE, whether you are a hardcore gamer or casual player you can make time to play this gem. Its MARIO!!!!

Finally Beat Final Fantasy 13 But Was It Worth It?

Depends. If you are a Final Fantasy fuck like me than you are gonna play regardless of what any review says because its a fucking FINAL FANTASY game. Square Enix doesn’t make bad products, but they still mess with your whole being.

First off this game doesn’t get going until your about 35 hours into it. When I beat the game I was on hour 70 something, but unlike most FF games this game actually wants you to finish the story mode BEFORE finishing any side quests. Only when you bet the story do you unlock all the hunt missions/side quests/final levels to each characters stats. And unlike all the previous Final Fantasy games you only control 1 character which pissed me off until I started to get deeper in this game. The pace of this game is fast which works for the new battle system, I was hating on it HARD, but I pulled an 180 and I totally back it. What doesn’t work is the insanely linier progression in the game. This is the only Final Fantasy game where you don’t need a strategy guide, its that easy to maneuver around the universe of Final Fantasy 13.

Graphics and music are unmatched. There is a cut scene when your party returns to Cocoon and its spectacular. It was one of the BEST cut scenes I have scene in a long time, it rivals most movie action sequences. Don’t believe me, fuck that shit check this-(you can stop watching after the 8 minute marks, its an intense 8 minutes)—

The story. Allah, Jesus, and Budda what were they thinking. It start to make sense real late in the game. Then you have the ending. WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?! In true Final Fantasy form they hit you with another dumb not making any type of sense ending. Any gamer would have been pissed after logging in that many hours for an ending like that! Unlike previous Final Fantasy games (particularly FF 7, FF 8, and FF 10) you don’t care as much about the characters. Plus Final Fantasy has yet to give me a better villain than Sephiroth.

So the Final Verdict? Battles are epic, gameplay is revamped, story is pretty flamenco so I am giving this game a 3 slabber.

Modern Warfare 2

Jesus Christmas. It is all out war on my PS3. I’d like to talk about 3 games that I feel like I’ll never stop playing. Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield 1943, and MAG. I WAS gonna just write about these things separately but their all so similar I figured I’d break each one down for you in one post. All 3 are online, all 3 are 1st person shooters, and all 3 require you to be war savvy and have some skills with a sniper rifle. Different time settings which means different weapons and little subtleties separate them from each other, just enough to make you want to play all 3…..all the time. First up Modern Warfare 2….

If anyone should ever play 1 war game in their life it should be either one of the Modern Warfares. Unbelievable graphics, story line, character acting, music, weapons, game play, cutscenes, and endings. This game is the only one of the 3 that is not primarily online, which means you can get your train on before you take it to the world. As in the first, you take on the role of several different characters as you proceed through the story, covering various parts of the world’s map. I won’t bore you with the details, but the story is SICK. Plot twists at almost every level ending, making you want to play the next chapter right away. OK great but the story eventually ends and this game goes back on the shelf right? WRONG. Now we also have 2 more awesome elements of this game, Special Ops and Multiplayer Online.

Special Ops is a series of either one player or mutilplayer mini games that demand all sorts of various skills you’ve learned throughout the game. Unlock more challenges by earning stars in 3 different levels of difficulty. Everything from running through training courses to snowmobile races could keep you busy for years. That is of course if you can stop playing mutiplayer online.

It’s 9 on 9 go time with a retaaaaaarrded amount of upgrades and perks as you level up. New weapons, attachments, abilities, and equipment await you at almost every headshot. Eventually you can even control Preditor missiles from above and order air strikes. Absolutely insane. Don’t worry about your level to be able to compete, at level 2 I was out scoring level 50′s and higher, it’s really easy to level up. I could go on and on here but I should move on to the next game, my final thought on Modern Warfare 2…..buy it immediately, it’s a no doubt five slab o’ beef .

Next up Battlefield 1943…

12 on 12 online only war where you are either USMC’s or Japanese soldiers fighting on War World II’s most famous battle grounds such as Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. Now this game is download only so there’s not a whole hell of a lot going on besides the actual game play. 3 basic characters that you can choose between before each respawn. What makes this game unique is the vehicle aspect, you can operate reappearing planes, tanks, jeeps, anti aircraft guns, .50cal turrets, even call in air raids. Personally, I like to post up at the AA guns and take out the pilot bitches that actually figured out how to fly those things good. That’s pretty much it, play and enjoy. For being a very one sided game this one loses a slab but it’s a solid 4 chunk deal.

Oh boy. For real another one? Yes. Another one.

MAG?, more like OMG. This is a store bought MMO title only on the PSN featuring an astonishing 256 simultaneous game player mode. Take the last two games and mash em together for this one that takes place in the future when private military corporations falsely promote world peace only to take over certain territories and carry out mini wars against each other. They are divided into 3 corporations 1 of which you will choose when starting the game. You will be in this corporation for the remainder of your existence. Move up through the ranks by scoring XP in each battle, eventually becoming squad leader, and then calling the shots from behind the lines. This of course will require a LOT of skill, these kids are real good at this game. I’ve only played this for a couple of hours but it is a very intricate and complex game, and only the more experienced gamer should spend their money on this one. I recommend renting it to see if you can hang first. Lots of upgrades and different character development as your level increases unlocking the 256 player games at level 8. This is still under investigation for me but so far so good and I could go ahead and give this one an easy 4 1/2 already.

A Cute and Most Gross Review of Critter Crunch

Eat or be eaten, exploring new worlds, super cute creatures, vomiting rainbows into your children’s mouth to sustain their hunger, all of these daily struggles can be found in a form of a puzzle game, Critter Crunch.

How in the hell did I end up downloading this? I beat darksiders at 2:45am. Not being able to sleep I hopped onto the PSN, where they were selling the game at a special discounted rate, something like $3.49. This is the best game I have EVER bought under $4, and I am a sucker for puzzle games, especially over the top cute gross themed puzzle games.

You are Biggs. Biggs lives on an island with hyper evolved critters that would make Darwin shit crystals. Talking about crystals, that is what this genre is all about. Basic mechanics are as follows, you feed “critters” to other critters on a tree from which they are descending from. You feed theses “critters” until they pop into crystallized poop, the larger the combo , the larger the crystal pop. The real fun is when you start creating large combos and chains. If you pop 8 or more critters at once “Smalls” your fuzzy little son will come out and you have to fill his mouth with rainbow vomit which you regurgitate, sounds gross but its epically awesome! If even one critter touches the ground its game over.

Unlike other puzzle games they give you a number of modes and scenarios so the game has expanded on the puzzle genre in an intuitive and FUN way. The challenges get really hard, will tease your brain, and when completed you feel like you have accomplished something.

The developer went over the top to make this game super cute and gross at the same time. The animation is sweet, looks like a cartoon, plus the music and the sound effects fit this little puzzle game just right.

Like I stated earlier this game is on the PSN and should be downloaded with the quickness, but Critter Crunch is on the iPhone as well as some other mobile devices. It’s a great game for the whole family and keeps this lazy mind sharp.

War Cometh Darksiders Review

Game DONE. I beat it last night after about 23 hours of gameplay. I liked this game so much I waited till after ai beat it to review it. Verdict, AWESOME.

What do I like about this game? EVERYTHING. LIST TIME!!!!

1.- This is a mature game.

2.- You fight as War, one of the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse plus at one point you ride on “RUIN” your horse (think Link’s Epona)

3.- You fight both Demons from Hell and Angelic Beings from Heaven.

4.- This games puzzles and dungeons are fun and intuitive, not hard and impossible.

5.- This games looks great, seamless cut scenes, great story.

6.- THIS GAME IS BLOODY AND GORE AS ALL HELL, rip people apart, cut of demons heads, slice hell dogs in half, rip off the wings of angels, and some of the most gruesome boss finish move can be executed in Darksides. The game doesn’t make you press all these crazy button combos to custom finish enemies like in God of War, to activate a finishing move you press 1 button, not a 5 button combo. This is better for me, because in a melee battle situations the last thing you want to be doing is in-putting finishing combo moves and you still have to shred 7 other enemies on screen.

7.-camera is excellent.

8.-Weapons and secondary weapons like the chain, chaos blade(boomerang weapon), horn, Scythe, power glove, and even a mask all play a role and can be used in multiple ways to defeat enemies/dungeons.

9.- Level design was on point.

10.- BOSS BATTLES WERE THE SHIT!!!

11.-Controls were tight.

12.- The onscreen menues and settings are boss.

13.- Joe Madureira left comics books for this project. Thnaks Joe, you the man!

There was very little I didn’t like about this game. The main thing I didn’t like was the map and certain tasks. I hate puzzles in an action/adventure type games, but Darksiders did this aspect very well. At certain points the task you had to do was unclear and sometimes I would get lost. In the beginning of the story War has a demonic sprite (voiced is played by Mark the motherfuckingjediofthisshit Hamill) cursed to his arm, this sprite functions as a guide in the game, this sprite also happens to be the worst guide ever. You hit select and he materializes and gives you “advise” on your current task. This advise is rarely of any use, which is a shame because Darksiders put so much time into every other aspect of this game. These moments were few and far between plus we live in an age with youtube, and BAZZARGAMER walkthrough was something I would use for an assist. NO HD on the WII? No Problem Component Cable Review

Getting a Wii over the holiday season was one of the highlights of 2009. Finding out that its not HD compatible was surprising, you figure that Nintendo would be defiantly have this aspect in their “cutting edge” Wii system, well they don’t. Luckly a good friend recommended these component cables, and since I have started the epic Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess I have to play in the best resolution as possible.

So I ordered these component cables. Unlike the 3 pronged red yellow and white standard RCA cables and the single awesomeness of HDMI cable this component cable has 5 prongs: blue, green, orange white and red. There are 2 inputs for these “ED Component Cables” in the back of my HD Sony. So I turned on my Wii and did a little test, and the results were good. One could see the difference when the ED component cables are hooked up to the flat screen versus the standard bullshit that Nintendo provides you with. The overall resolution down to the pixels were much sharper, the colors were more vibrant and didn’t seem as pastel like when the RCA cables are hooked up. I think in the end after shipping, which by the was extremely fast, the cost a total of around $7-$9 clams. A cheap but nessasarry upgrade when living in a HD world baby.
