Haaris Ahmed is the Ronin Samurai around these parts.

gamerI went to see an action movie this past Labor Day to escape the heat of the California sun. I was expecting a mindless movie about how people in the future control death row inmates to carry out military mission in real life. It was rated R so I knew  was in store for some serious violence. What I didn’t expect is an AWESOME storyline that is deep, engaging and critically analyzes the current state of America, youth culture, technology, social networking, biology, classism, and most importantly control.

Before I go any further, I assure you to spend whatever change you have and GO SEE THIS MOVIE. You don’t have to be into videogames to appreciate this flick. This movie surprised the living hell out of me because of how well and how different it was. It is also very twisted, like “Seven” twisted, and really fucking violent. I love it when an R rating goes hard.  Now if you want to spoil it read on, I know you are going to anyways so I will leave as much stuff as I can out of this particular review.

So the movie takes place in a possible future that is ruled by corporate assisted governments, and the populace is transfixed on the new media. TV and the internet have meshed into a 1 and are projected in hologram form as well as all over walls, sides of buildings, etc. Consumerism is key and the biggest money makers are 2 shows, “Society “and “Slayers”. Both these show were started by 1 dude, a multi billionaire named Ken Castle(Michael C Hall).

Society was the 1st show to revolutionize and mesh reality TV and MMORPG( Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) into a new interactive experience. A person on the net control controls a REAL LIFE avatar in “Society”, think the SIMS only you are controlling real people. And how is this control possible, nano-technology that infect the brain. Society has all sorts of sexually lewd behavior, violence and general debauchery that you would find in any chat room, only they are using real people. Enter Matt Castle’s new show/interactive experience, SLAYERS, and its poster boys, Kable(Gerard Butler) and Simon(Logan Lerman)

This is where the movie starts. Slayers is a new game/TV show that puts inmates on death-row on the front line of military combat, and these “slayers” are controlled by gamers at home, much like a 1st person shooter. The kicker is that any inmate that completes 30 missions without dying will get a  full pardon. Sounds like fun. Kable is only a handful of missions away from his goal. Simon, is a teenage prodigy when it comes to this game, getting hit up by everyone and his mother to grab a piece of his pie. In fact the movie does a real good job commenting on the youth in this country.

I don’t want to dive to deep into this story line, Ludacris is a freedom fighting cyber terrorist that assists Kable in breaking free from the chains of Slayer. And Terry Crews is in this flick, he is the MAN!!!! Kyra Sedgwick does a great job playing an Oprah like talk show host that saps the American opinion the way she see’s fit. The fight sequences are gritty, the pace of the movie is fast, and it is well acted for an action flick.

All in all see this great action flick with a story, you won’t be disappointed.
