When I decided to watch this movie, I really had no idea what I was about to see. Except that I had heard that it was an artsy horror movie starring the always awesome Willem Dafoe. So I said sure, why not? Two minutes into the movie and I had already seen the close up of a penis penetrating a vagina. This movie was already much better than I had anticipated.
He (Willem Dafoe) and She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) are a married couple with a young toddler, who while they were busy having graphic, adult sexual intercourse, decides to escape from his crib, climb up to a window and fall to his death. She is distraught over the death of her child, so He decides to help her (He happens to be a psychologist of psychiatrist) by helping her confront her fears.
Then the acid started to kick in, metaphorically speaking. I don’t want to give any spoilers but I’ll just let you know that shit gets really fucked up. There is more penis, and more vagina, but nothing sexy about either. There are talking animals and psychedelic scenes. It’s like Alice in Wonderland meets Rosemary’s Baby and Misery. This is not the kind of money you watch just because you needed something to watch. You better be prepared for it.
I liked how it was filmed, the story was interesting and the gore and violence mixed with the graphic sexuality was right up my alley. But was this movie good or was it merely pushing buttons. I feel that for the sake of the plot those buttons needed to be pushed. There is a reason for the sex and the violence and the ending is fitting.
I give this move 3 meaty steaks. I’ll watch it a few more times, I’m sure, but the viewings will have to be spread far apart.
