The Blood Factory

The Blood Factory is a pioneering internet, horror venture by none other than Danny DeVito and writer John Albo. The two have created an online world of terror, similar to what “Tales from the Crypt” brought to cable-television. The site currently consists of five short videos and a visually stunning interactive design, that in its present state merely adds to our imaginations, as to what will come next as it further develops.
This is what writer John Albo has to say about the site on his section on Thebloodfactory.com, “At the Blood Factory, the predators are our heroes, and we love them because of their vile natures and evil ways. But our love doesn’t end there. We extend it to you, our fans: We vow to feed your ravenous addiction to horror movies with heaping plates of blood and guts, drizzled with adrenaline-pumped sweat from slaughtered human prey. And for dessert, we may even carve up a corpse or two.”
Like I previously stated, currently there are five short videos to watch, “Shade of Sin”, “Rough Trade”, “Listen to Me”, “Tattoo” and “Raw”. Now, for those of you horror fans that seek out deep plots with intriguing twists or turns, you won’t find it here. Frankly, there is just not enough time allotted within these short movies to venture into a psychological roller coaster. However, these are pure pulp, horror stories with special effects that would make Tom Savini proud. None of the short movies are for the easily squeamish; there is plenty of blood, guts and violence. Aptly, the site is intended for viewers over 18, so if you’re under 18, remember to put any date prior to 1990 to enter.
So how exactly do the stories actually hold up? Three of the five movies were actually decent. The first one, “Shades of Sin”, has a tiny plot twist that works nicely into the extremely bloody and gory aftermath. “Rough Trade” and “Listen to Me” were essentially visual puns that lead into extremely bloody and gory aftermaths. My favorite was probably the fourth one, “Tattoo” which actually provided the best story and character development before leading up to an extremely bloody and gory aftermath. Finally, the fifth film, “Raw”, well, I’m sure you can guess how it ends.
This site is not for the occasional viewer of horror movies like “The Ring” or “A Haunting in Connecticut”. This is created for the horror geek, those breeds of us who enjoy to go to bed watching “Hellraiser 2″ or “Maniac”. The films on this site are like orange Tic-Tacs, you only need to watch one at a time, but you’ll end up shoving the entire pack in your mouth at once.
According to a press-release on the site, “(Danny Devito and John Albo are) testing economic model of short films on websites by not selling advertising, with hopes that the gory offerings will coagulate into a venture that will pay for itself.” I personally hope this works out. Not just for horror, but for all film genres in general. The only way that new and exciting things can come out is by sharing with the world our creativity, and what better way and medium than by using the internet.
PS: the first film, “Shade of Sin” has titties. That’s always a plus when making a horror movie.

This site is awesome and now has a permanent spot on my quick links
Just checked it out with jpow…
I liked Shades of Sin — good concept.
I am a big fan of Carol Kane, and it was great to see her as a psycho,
although the writing could have been better in Listen To Me.
I also thought Rough Trade and Raw were awesome!
(That’s what makes you soft in the head, ad light in the loafers — ha!)
And Tattoo was pretty good too!
