On Saturday, August 1st, I attended the All Points West Festival at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. With the Statue of Liberty and the New York City skyline as a backdrop, this new festival, spanning three days in its sophomore year, offered a variety of acts from comedian Jim Jeffries to the super metal group, Tool. The weather was perfect, the scenery great, the beer overpriced and the grounds muddy, real muddy.
So after visiting my cousin and making some rounds in my old hood, I was definitely ready to hit the festival. Upon entering the show, we came up on the first stage where a band called The Postelles played. UMMM, these dudes are from New York. They had a fifties Rock N Roll sound to them. It wasn’t un-listenable, but it really didn’t do anything for me. We stood around for two song and had enough before moving on.
Walking along the path to the next stage, there were a few sculptures scattered about like this red tent thingy (below) that looked like it was made out of bat wings.
These jammers over here are the techno huts they had.
A few different DJ’s were spinning throughout the night and it was still jumpin’ on the way out. !!!!DISCO DISCO!!!!
As we were walking and looking at the different displays, we could hear the band playing on the main stage, which turned out to be ARCTIC MONKEYS .These dudes were AWESOME!!! They had a Franz Ferdinand sound to them, but at a faster pace. The set kept a fast pace all the way through, great riffs with just enough distortion to stay energetic. Awesome Show!!!
(Ahem, Whiteface here. Didn’t I just tell ya’ll The Arctic Monkeys were the shit? I think so. Go on….)
They get my R.M.R. STAMP OF DEATH
The next band up on the Main Stage was called GOGOL BORDELLO. These guys were crazy. They are a gypsy funk/raggeaish band with two guitarists, an old dude on the violin, a bass player, an accordion player, a sick lil drummer, who also played the bongos and two cute backup singers who stirred it up on stage. At one point, the girls came out with marching band cymbals and bass drum. They were a unique group. The lead singer looked like a cracked up wizard that was nonstop all over the stage. Check em out. THEY GET THE STAMP TO R.M.R.
Then came the worst shit I’ve heard in a while. My Bloody Valentine was awful. The whole set was one long, distorted, fuzzy mess of crap. Really this shit was just ugly. Never have I seen a whole festival crowd give the band the finger. You could hear the shouts of U SUCK AND FUCK U over the garbage being spewed from the speakers. Aweful… They should sacrifice themselves to GWAR.
And then there was TOOL…..
Awesome like usual. The laser light show was sick. The set was sick. Tool is just sick. If you didn’t know this, now you do.
