BORIS Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Volume 1-3 7inch Reviews
Boris is one of the best bands to come out of the land of the rising sun. They have stormed the globe with their cultivated “doom” sound that has made them popular. The last time they were in the states they played an Atlanta festival with a bunch of other bands including Mastodon. Before that the last time they were stateside they played a bunch of mid west shows(I went to the one in Ohio) with NIN on their “lights in the sky” tour in late 2008. Boris is also know for constantly making new music, which is a good thing if you’re one of their fans like I am.
Japanese Heavy Rocks Hits is a series of 3 7inch records with one coming out each month (September, October, and November) and if you ordered a special limited edition package from their record label, Southern Lord, you would have acquired a special limited edition 4th bonus vinyl, I was one of the many who did not buy this special 3 pack in time. I have made multiple attempts on contacting Southern Lord but this label’s customer service sucks ass.
Japanese Heavy Rocks 3 volumes are great. All 3 vinyl’s feature 2 singles on each vinyl. All 6 songs are stand alone and I would not be surprised if Southern Lord or Boris bundled them into an EP in the future. Most of the songs are above the 6 minute mark, and all of the songs have been featured on New Noize, my specialty hour on 92.9 KJEE Santa Barbara’s Modern Rock. These tracks don’t feel rushed at all, in fact they are a representation of Boris’s body of work, it spans from the super fast metal to the Boris signature drone loud feedback ballads, stretched out audio coupled with spazmatic drums, and even one track is a 7 minute lullaby. I would rather a band like Boris come out with singles and put out this type of refined carefully laid out music than rushed loud noise. The only problem I have with this is that Southern Lord doesn’t provide you with a downloadable codes with the singles. This means that I have to buy the vinyl and go online to iTunes or Amazon and buy the tracks digitally as well, luckily the tracks are only 99 cents when purchasing them online. I had to subtract a meaty slab cause vinyl is hard to set up on the bus.
