Ba BabaBa baaaa Ba ba ba Baaaa…So i went to see Deerhoof, and experimental rock band from SF at a small club in downtown Santa Barbara, the Velvet Jones. They KILLED IT!!!!! You want more details? Ok fucker its Friday but I’ll hit you off….

Deerhoof. Lead singer is 4 foot nothing Japanese chick that smacks the bass, pulls crazy dance moves, and has a voice straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The 2 current guitarists that they have mesh sound, distortion, feedback, sporadic rifts and soothing melodies that creates both style, a distinct “deerhoof” sound and fun to watch. The Drummer, Greg Saunier, SHREDS the drums. That is the awesome thing about Deerhoof, they play a free form style, visiting their songs on the album , but jamming out in a totally different direction that makes for audio bliss.

The Velvet Jones is a great place to see a show when done right. Sound was amazing for this show, but the separation of 21 and under vs. the legal drinkers was annoying, especially since my 18 year old brother was there.

Oso a local band was GREAT, violins, collective vocal harmonies and distortion are all things I love and Oso did not disappoint. I would see them again if they played a local show, hands down.

So onto Deerhoof. I saw them play a couple months back at the Echoplex and at the LA Natural History Museum with Autolux a couple of years back. Both shows were fantastic and totally different from each other; and Deerhoof brought their A game.

The set list was a dope mix of old and new, the new I like as much as the old. Buck and Judy, my favorite song on their latest album, Offend Maggie, was shorter than I wanted it to be, but who cares. When they played their tribute to the greatest sports game ever, Basketball, Satomi Matsuzaki pulled out a mini green flashing basketball, it must of had batteries. They also covered a Ramones song, Pin Head, which was AWESOME. When they came out for their encore everyone switched instruments, did another cover, switched back, played 1 more and bounced. It was about an hour and 15 minutes. The turnout was good, not sell out. Oh and where did I stand, right next to the stage, heck yeah.

Afterwards I got to say wassup to the entire band, and the entire band was super cool to me, I talked to one of the guitarist about the Wu Tang, thats how cool they were. the “W” is everywhere…..

So if you have a chance go see Deerhoof, they will not disappoint

I also have shitty picture via my shitty camera phone, I might post them later.
