Got Colored- HEALTH @ Troubadour 9/09/09
9/9/09 is one of the coolest dates ever in the history of dates, and to celebrate I went down to another dope spot in LA, the Troubadour to see HEALTH, a band that hails from this area.
Some background on this super loud noise filled band, they have a new album out, GET COLOR and opened for NIN for some of their club shows on their wave goodbye tour. Trent Reznor could have got anyone to open for him, but he chose HEALTH, hmmm.
1ST off I dig HEALTH’s sound, so this review maybe bias, then again it’s my motherfuckin review so your just gonna have to take it. Health plays/manipulates/creates/destroys sound in ways that set my brain into a frenzy. They are super aggressive live, the drummer shreds hard, as well as the other 3 members of the band. In fact the other 3 band members are constantly playing, tweaking, tinkering, and smashing multiple instruments/drum kits/mics/guitars and all sorts of audio based equipment. I also loved the fact that they were all over the stage moving around, sweating it out and even screaming out loud without being in front of a mic, they really let it all hang out on stage.
Health did a good mix of old stuff off their self titled debut album including Crimewave, Zoothorns, //M\\, Girl Attorney and I think they did Perfect Skin. I also got a serious dose of new stuff, Die Slow, Death+, and Nice Girls all stood out, but my favorite was the live rendition of Eat Flesh, man they killed that song.
They went on stage a bit earlier than scheduled, which I never have a problem with, and blasted through their set in about an hour and some change. They ended their show with “Courtship.”
I recommend seeing this band if you like your experimental music loud, bring earplugs unless you want permanent damage to incur, I still can’t hear out of my right ear, and that’s how I like my HEALTH.
