Micachu and the Shapes Live Review – Abstract Punk Rock Genius
Yeah i said it. So last night i took that long trek down the 101 highway to see a UK trio, Micachu and the Shapes, at the Echo in LA. Ever since i popped in their debut CD “Jewellery” i was fascinated by how sporadically different they are from your current noise and post punk rock bands. Their album contains so many strange and unregistered noises that half the excitement about the show was to see the ”instruments” that produce these alien sounds. And they did not disappoint. These cats were strange, off beat but on point, and pretty in sync. They had so much distortion, feedback, random noise coupled with punk rock arrangements that reminded me of a semi automatic weapon going off in spurts. The lead singer chick has a super androgynous voice, being able to sing highs and lows throughout their 75 minute set. The keyboardist/sound producer/drum machine operator/wine bottle smacker/super fine chick is a great asset to the band, playing multipule instruments plugged into her mac, smacking both drum pads, synthesised keyboards, and singing responses. The drummer reminded me of a tall skinny white dude from 1990 that attends Bayside High, but he was dope at playing the drums, plus a lot of other percussion items strapped on his kit; think Zach Morris meets Pots and Pans!!!! He has a free formed jazz style that is sped up and seemed to have no direction, which is AWESOME.
I could dive deeper into specifics on songs that they played like ”Golden Phone”, ”Curly Teeth” or “Lips” and how they were just distinct enough to recognise the song, yet had a free formed musical treatment to provide the audience with an original sounding show, but i wont do that cause i HATE when bloggers just start rambling on and on……
It was refreshing to see punk rock enter the next phase, incorporating the vintage soul while uploading current technology, making them a new hybrid of a band that i will see multiple times and anticipate any other audio or media related shit they put out. In fact you should check em out right now, go ahead touch a link and turn up those computer speakers….
