One of the Best Live Shows of 2009 Portugal the Man @ the Troubadour 9/26/2009
Yet another show at the Troubadour, and man what a live show it was! The title says is all. Lets get into it.
After some technical difficulties at the door with tickets that the Label Rep was kind enough to smooth over I was once again transported to one of the best venues in all of LA, the Troubadour to see a band who I have been wanting to see for some time now. It was a hot night in the club that night, and the vibe was straight out of 1972.
Portugal the Man is currently on tour supporting their latest audio endeavor, the Satanic Satanist, which is a great record, then again all their records are great. So I was real curious to see their live show, and I must say they brought the ROCK.
Beer in hand I secured a spot to the right of the stage as the band went into the second song of their slammed out set. It was a sold out show, which is always good at small venue, the crowd was INTO the show, the audience was screaming lyrics throughout the preformance. Crowd surfing, groupies and a loud sweaty club is the perfect Rock Cocktail, and I was fucking thirsty.
On to the band, Portugal the Man brings the proverbial “it”. There was only 4 people in the band, but it sounded like there was 20! everyone except the drummer was singing lyrics and the keyboardist had a whole slew of instruments that he was playing, my favorite was when he turned is back to the crowd and started to smack the shit out of the bongos like Donkey Kong, if DK was a white dude with glasses.
The music itself was amazing. Doing a great mix of old and new and different rendition of each song, bleeding audio in a jam like fashion only with pure rock tradition. The cover songs were my highlight cause they did a shitload! Ready, they did One is the Loneliest number into some David fuckin Bowie Ziggy Stardust material, then some MGMT and keeping it in the NYC with the don himself, GHOSTFACE KILLAH. Any band that does that combination in 1 night all while putting their signature on each tune has madd skills and they defiantly made a fan out of me!
This meaty review was raw, juicy and bloody just the way I like it. Go see Portugal the Man when they come to your town and tell them the Meat sent ya!
