Run Run Run Away with the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s @ the LA Greek 9/17/09
This was the 5th time I have met up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and it just keeps getting better. The show was amazing.
Yatch and the Breeders opened for this Thursday night affair. Unfortunately having to drive down to LA takes time, so I missed both acts. The LA Greek is my FAVORITE venue on the West side, its like the Santa Barbara Bowl only better, the sound is amazing and the outdoor venue doesn’t have a bad seat. I sat a couple rows back dead center behind the soundboard.
The trio opened with Runaway, a slower but melodic song that captivated the crowd. This show was swarming with subtle feedback, rolling jazz like beats and of course the dominating force of Karren O and her rock star stylings. They packed a lot of new music during this 75 minute set. The show was dominated by tracks off their new album, It’s Blitz, some of which were Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, Skeletons, Hysteric and my personal favorite Dull Life. It’s Blitz, their newest album is a departure from their older sound. Musically this album is heaver on the atmosphere with strong melodic music, lots of Bowie like synthesisers accents and sporadic drumelines. They played the entire show that way, which is different from their ultra rock show that they normally put on previous tours. They worked crowed favorites like Cheated Hearts and Gold Lion, but whenever they went into material off their first album the energy sky rocked. In the middle of the show the YYY decided to play Pin, which set the crowd on fire. Honeybear off of Show Your Bones is a personal favorite and I was glad they did it.
Karren O commanded the crowd with sweaty sincerity. She has been known to stick the entire microphone in her mouth and scream, which creates an awesome vocal snarl you gotta hear! Plus she made a couple of waredrobe changes, for Zero she put her leather on and during Skeleton she wore a multi colored Native American Chieftain Headdress. The on stage theatrics didn’t stop there, in the middle of the show the stagehands and roadies grabbed 3 huge balloon eyeballs and threw them into the crowd. The croshendo came when 2 geysers of confetti shot into the air and cover all of section A at the Greek Theater white red pink and white paper.
They came back on stage for the encore and did Y Control, an acoustic version of Maps for all the lovers out at the venue that night, and finished with Date with the Night!!!!! Date with the Night was a surprise song to finish with, and they visually expressed this by Karren O stomping on a contraption that would ignite yet another confetti explosion.
In the end the Yeah Yeah Yeahs brought a new NYC sound with the same badmotherfuckinkickasssetyourhaironfirewhileslappinyomama attitude.
